MY ESSAY ESSAY
The story Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is about a man named Goodman Brown who's entire vision of the world changes after spending one night with the devil. It is crazy how if the setting and mood is right you can imagine almost anything. There is one night where Goodman Brown feels he must head for the woods, by that he finds himself walking with the devil. To Brown's discovery the good people who surround his life know the devil too.Goodman Brown sees how the people and all he knows have a dark side. When Goodman Brown sees his wife Faith in the meeting with the devil, he loses his faith too. Hawthorne communicates this theme by using characterization, symbolism, and diction. The main point of my essay is focus on the idea of the theme which is good vs. evil. In this story we see two complete opposite perpectives.Young Goodman Brown, at first, was living life thinking how great everything was including his lovely wife Faith. All that changes after he realizes, important figures in his life, and his wife, Faith, weren't perfectly holy. He also finds out how his own ancestors have dark ties of their own with sinning and being bad. In this story I see characterization in how Goodman Brown's persona changes as it progresses. The next thing we knew, Goodman turns bitter. In the beginning he was so sure of himself and overall good. Goodman thought everything was great until the devil was talking about how he and his grandfather knew eachother very well. That right there seemed to be a breaking point because after that he found out alot of people he knows associate with the devil . In this story I also see symbolism in how the way certain things are described. The first thing I notice is that in a way Goodman Brown's wife represents his own faith, in the end of the story his personal faith was gone blaming the bad doing of others. Goodman Brown also in a way represent the story of Adam and Eve because he was persuaded to give in and sin, although he is a good guy, hence his name Goodman. The forest also represented a place where bad things were to happen, so people believed in that time. In this story the last thing I see is diction, Nathaniel Hawthorne has a way with his words. Hawthorne describes an old lady cackling aloud instead of using another word to say she was laughing, the word cackle reminds people of witches.
