FIRST IMPRESSION OF A DREAM

My first impression on a "Dream within a Dream" was basically "woah, okay". It made me feel cool and interested. It kind of brought today's journal topic to mind because today we were talking about dreams, and a nightmare is a just a bad dream.

MY ESSAY ESSAY

The story Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is about a man named Goodman Brown who's entire vision of the world changes after spending one night with the devil. It is crazy how if the setting and mood is right you can imagine almost anything. There is one night where Goodman Brown feels he must head for the woods, by that he finds himself walking with the devil. To Brown's discovery the good people who surround his life know the devil too.Goodman Brown sees how the people and all he knows have a dark side. When Goodman Brown sees his wife Faith in the meeting with the devil, he loses his faith too. Hawthorne communicates this theme by using characterization, symbolism, and diction. The main point of my essay is focus on the idea of the theme which is good vs. evil. In this story we see two complete opposite perpectives.Young Goodman Brown, at first, was living life thinking how great everything was including his lovely wife Faith. All that changes after he realizes, important figures in his life, and his wife, Faith, weren't perfectly holy. He also finds out how his own ancestors have dark ties of their own with sinning and being bad. In this story I see characterization in how Goodman Brown's persona changes as it progresses. The next thing we knew, Goodman turns bitter. In the beginning he was so sure of himself and overall good. Goodman thought everything was great until the devil was talking about how he and his grandfather knew eachother very well. That right there seemed to be a breaking point because after that he found out alot of people he knows associate with the devil . In this story I also see symbolism in how the way certain things are described. The first thing I notice is that in a way Goodman Brown's wife represents his own faith, in the end of the story his personal faith was gone blaming the bad doing of others. Goodman Brown also in a way represent the story of Adam and Eve because he was persuaded to give in and sin, although he is a good guy, hence his name Goodman. The forest also represented a place where bad things were to happen, so people believed in that time. In this story the last thing I see is diction, Nathaniel Hawthorne has a way with his words.  Hawthorne describes an old lady cackling aloud instead of using another word to say she was laughing, the word cackle reminds people of witches.

MY THESIS STATEMENT

The main point of my essay is to understand the reason being for the story I'd say. I would also say that it would be easier to reflect on the story Young Goodman Brown with a prompt because it could help us start somewhere.

READ TALK UNDERSTAND

Class Notes:

  • password is only as strong as weakest website you have been on
  • you want a combo of upper and lower case letters

Today I learned that my password is only as strong as the weakest website I have been on. Also that I should be changing my password atleast every thirty days, and goverment officials can make us unlock our iPhone by making us press our finger print or the face recognition. One more thing I also learned was that it would be smart if all my passwords were different and with words/numbers.

YOUNG OLD GOOD BAD

I think Hawthorne wrote "Young Goodman Brown" because he had family connections with the toruring of the witches in salem. He felt bad about it. I don't know why Stephen King was affected by this story. Maybe because he was scared about how Brown was talking to the devil, and spoke about the witches. We can never know everything about people because the past stays in the past and our imaginations are so powerfull, we can imagine almost anything depending on how we feel.

HAVING THE TIME OF MY LIFE

Understanding my time can help me understand how to improve my desicions in how I use my time because I do tend to procastinate alot, but I could figure how not too. I could be more productive and get more things done faster and have more free time.

Young Goodman Brown Questions Answers

  1. I believe Hawthorne's purpose for writing the story is so people can understand that alot of "good" people can have a "dark" side or past and nightmares can feel so real.
  2. I do agree that Faith's name is Faith. Yes, it does fit her personality because she's caring and loves her husband. Brown seems to have lost true faith in his wife in the end of the story because he didn't greet her back.
  3. The pink ribbons signify innocence and the good meaning Faith is a good person.
  4. Everything Brown witnessed was real, a figment of his imagination, and something conjured by evil, the man to a walk in the dark forest for crying out loud. I say all this because in the story it mentions "There may be a devilish Indian behind every tree," said Goodman Brown to himself; and he glanced fearfully behind him, as he added, "What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!" then he meets another man with a staff that looks like a real snake.
  5.  The old man was the evil one, the devil himself. The textual clues that told me this was "beheld the figure of a man, in grave and decent attire" "with a tremor in his voice, caused by the sudden appearance of his companion" "But the only thing about him, that could be fixed upon as remarkable, was his staff, which bore the likeness of a great black snake" " I helped your grandfather, the constable, when he lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem".
  6. The staff represents a snake and snakes represent evil temptation, the evilness that can convince people to sin. The staff is a primary motivator that lead brown onward.
  7.  If Young Goodman Brown didn't go into the forest that night to run an errand, his life would be totally different, he instead of knowing how close evil is all around him, he'd be happy and cheerful thinking all around him is good/pure. He would still have Faith of course. He would still fully trust his wife, Faith, and his fellow townspeople.

LITERATURE ANALYSIS: The Girl Named Disaster

Literature Analysis #1

Questions

  1.  The plot of the novel is basically about a strong and brave girl named Nhamo who was given the option to marry this abusive man or runaway and look for her dad, so she chose to runaway and look for her dad.  Also what seemed to be a quick two day trip turned to a year long trip. During the year Nhamo was changing, she was growing up, and she learned how to act more modern. It also turns out that her family on her dad's side was super wealthy.
  2. I don't know if this is cliche but I would have to say that the theme is family. This is because this whole book about how she was with her mother's family but she rightfully belongs with her dad's family.
  3. My author's morning routine would have to be waking up early on a cold rainy day drinking something nice and warm. On this free day she gets comfy and stretches. For breakfast she eats a strawberry banana smoothie with almound milk, she sadly spills some on her carpet. After she is done eating she heads to her writing desk and continues to write this book. The three excerpts I got for these were "She turned over on her back to catch her breath. The lake roared in her ears, and sunlight jagged off the waves"  "Nhamo felt slightly happier that this was a real lake and not the ghostly realm of njuzu" "She had no doubt that spirit hands had directed the boat when she was too weak to row".
  4. Personification:1)"The lake roared in her ears, and sunlight jagged off the waves" 2) "Stupid water!" She shouted at the lake. "Why can't you flow in that direction for a change?"' 3) "Fortunately, no matter how vigorously she paddled, the opening never got any closer"    Mood: 1) "It's always my turn, thought Nhamo" 2) "Her body worked all day planting, weeding, baby-sitting, washing-oh, so many chores!" 3)  "The child was sleeping by the door of the hut, but the animal walked past her and attacked mother instead"

THE MEDUIM IS THE MESSAGE

class notes-
techne -cleverness
a message seems different if you get it from diff places
medium=media
talking is cheap actions speak louder than words
change password every 30 days

I would most likely choose the channel that directly messages the person, but I can't decide whether it would be email or text message. I feel like those would be most appropriate for my communication because it doesn't really involve anything else, and it is direct. I would like this better.

SO THIS GUY GOES FOR A WALK...

I am flabbergasted, I was also low-key lost in the begining but they whole story left me shook. For a second I thought Faith had died, stuff that has to do with witches is actually so freaking scary. When it said, evil should be happiness, I was like wow wow wow. And the way how Young Goodman Brown had changed so much after that one meeting, omg. I would definitly enjoy a deeper explanation on this story, definitly interested in learning more about this.

I AIN'T GOT TIME FOR THIS

Class Notes:

IF WE INVEST TIME and effot IN ENERGY SOMETIMES WE DONT SUCCEED SO WE GET FRUSTRATED AND SOMETIMES WE DO SUCCEED
if we dont get the satisfaction we are looking for we reduce our effort
the only to get satisfaction without putting in much time and effort is being confident because they were ecited to put in the work but it doesn't exist
nothing is absoulute
it is only possible if we put in time and effort
-selling time is we we exchange our time in the market (utter-directed)
ex. hw, school
-giving time is our focus on other people (other)
ex. phone
-spending time is when we exchange our time for stuff we find rewarding (inner)
ex. gardening
-killing (passing) time is is whats betweem them and their freedom, time to recharge
allocation means portions

For today's blog question i would have to say my habits in time don't really support my goals because I procastinate alot.

THE EARTH ON THE TURTLES BACK

I thought the story was cute, I liked it and would honestly read it again. I liked the way that the theme was basically how no matter what your like, you can accomplish anything. BIG/SMALL I would also like to add that I feel like I missed some parts of the story because I didn't hear some people. The story has suspense, personification

TODAY I WAS THINKING

When I think about Mindfulness, I think about reality, what's around me, also I think about peace. I am not really the type of person to write down goals of what to do in the week but I box check marks, I literally love my agenda. During the week, I am ALWAYS getting something done whether it be hw, classwork, etc. I don't really use my phone but I try sometimes, everyday I take pics of the agendas in my classes and later on add that to my agenda.

THE MAKING OF AN ESSAY

 Notes-
MONTAIGNE  - def. essay in french means to try
-def. (to us) to try to make yourself understood

-My experience with writing an essay always feels like a drag. For me it is so time consuming because before I even write, I take a while thinking how I want to word out my senences. I always work when I got time to work, I always prefer not to waste any time because if I waste time eventually everyhink will be piled up for me. I do however like writing/typing up stuff, especially when it could be anything.

EVERYTHING IS A REMIX

Notes-

This is to turn something new, anybody can do it, we don't need expensive materials, you don't need skills. You took something that exists edited it in to something new.
Most early stories came out of the government or people who tell stories.
We create by 3 basic elements:
- (copy)domain knowlegde- speak how everybody else speaks, talk to people
- transformation- creating varition by taking things that exist its time consuming
- combinations- taking existing stuff and merging them together, making something new
Original ideas are now considered property so this can bring implications
loss aversion is that we don't know we are taking other people's things
If we think of ideas as property it can set off a chain of events
Ideas can set off other ideas

NOW I REMEMBER

(late post)

I basically remembered the Richard Cory poem by simply reading it, recording, and repeating it as I listen to the recordings. It was simple and tough at the same time, I spent a few days just reading it and on the third-ish day I got it down.

THE FIRST 50 PAGES

My first impression on the book I chose last minute, it is okay. I am not really excited or dissapointed per se, but sadly reading feels a little boring. I got this book because I thought it would be super interesting, so far not much. The main character is Nhamo.

THIS BOOK IS DANGEROUS
